Stains on my Mattress

Recently the rapper/producer duo known collectively as Atmosphere released a new ep under their Sad Clown Bad Dub series titled “Sad Clown Bad Summer 9”. It contained 5 raptastic tracks like the single “Sunshine” about a hangover and the song I’m giving you now, “Mattress”. Seriously, I have been dancing in my car to this song for like 2 weeks now. It’s good times like few songs are these days. Ant, the producer, is possibly the best producer with the least acknowledgement out today. He was making beats like this before you ever heard the name Kanye West and will continue to long after Kanye fades into bad music oblivion (hopefully). And of course Slug delivers to…just listen.

A Long Long Time

So it’s been awhile since I posted up something totally rad and awesome. I’ve been a busy dude lately and I am sorry because I have nothing new for you as maxtapes go. I’m thinking about changing the format inwhich I give you the awesomeness. It’s wearing to make these maxtapes all the time so I might just hit you off with a track here and there that I think you need to memorize to make your life fulfilling…

And that song would be “Crippled Inside” by John Lennon. It is an amazing song with amazing lyrics and a danceable groovey twang. This is the second track of the legendary Imagine album which you should own so I don’t even know why I’m posting this because you should already have it. But I’m going to post it anyways. Listen, love and be merry.

MAXTAPED vol.7: dance dance evolution

Despite the name this really isn’t a dance mix, you could try to dance to it but I must warn you, you’ll probably hurt yourself. It started out as the closest thing to a dance mix my collection would allow (and it probably still is) and some how it turned into something all weird and awesome (and rad). There’s lots of good times in these songs and probably lots of drugs. So go ahead, turn up the stereo and smoke some crack and…well do whatever it is people on crack do…steal dvds and a sock drawer.

MAXTAPED vol.6: olde tymers

Old school means different things to different people. In hip hop the term changes depending on when the person got into hip hop. But really, old school is a specific kind of hip hop. There was a specific time when it was made and there was a time when it stopped being made. People often claim different dates, but basically it runs from the early to mid 70’s until approximately 1988 (although here I’m letting it slide to ‘89). There was a change that occurred around this time. Many people consider ‘88 the greatest year in hip hop, it’s the year hip hop took off and it’s the year you can mark on your calendar as the year old school officially ceased to exist (although there’s a couple that got by). You might think The Chronic is old school or that Illmatic is old school…but as you listen to this here mixtape I think you will notice the difference. Hip hop use to be fun and inventive, not about money and guns. You’ll enjoy this, seriously, you can’t say Roxanne Shante’s “Wack It” doesn’t bring a smile to your face or that you don’t want to rap along to Audio Two’s (legendary one hit wonder song) “Top Billin”. Good times, great oldies…

MAXTAPED vol.5: the art of diss

Something that has been an integral part of hip hop since very early is the battle. Whether freestyle battling or the ultimate diss track, it has always been there to show who’s harder, who’s more skilled and frankly who’s the best in this hip hop shit. It’s been done again and again and my goal here is to show you the most important and entertaining of these diss tracks starting with the ultimate battle…a legendary battle…some might argue the best battle in hip hop history…KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions vs. MC Shan and The Juice Crew…all the way to one of the most talked about, publicized and possibly violent battles in history…2pac and Deathrow Records vs. Notorious B.I.G. and Bad Boy Records. I’m even letting you in on some newer lesser known but usually better battles…and more… The last time I did this I added a huge break down of each battle, but this time I’m not going to keep that part, if you’re interested you can find it all on wikipedia.org. Just listen to the shit. There’s 2 volumes, the first is about ’86 to ’96 and the second is ’96 to present…

MAXTAPED vol.4: inter mental

So this week is an instrumental mixtape. I know people these days despise instrumental music, for the most part, but trust me, this is probably the best mixtape thus far. Now, instrumental doesn’t always mean no vocals or voice. In fact almost all of these songs have a voice in it in some way or another but I would still classify them as instrumental. The voice in most of these are there simply another instrument in the song. In most vocal songs the voice is the main focus where as in these songs the voice is only part. I think if you give it a shot you will enjoy this mixtape more then…actually all of my mixtapes RULE… But this one’s got everything from classical music mashed with TV themes to KRS-one mashed with Beck (I usually hate mash-ups, but this one is that rare exception) to some of the modern masters of instrumental music like RJD2, DJ Shadow and Dosh (who is my favorite of the bunch). So sit down, shut-up, love it like you know you want to and enjoy…trust me, I haven’t been able to get this out of my car stereo for 2 weeks.
